Today, we will see some of the most common mistakes

As you can imagine, someone can easily use

ฮปฮฌฮธฮฟฯ‚ ฯ€ฯ„ฯŽฯƒฮท ฮฎ ฮฌฯฮธฯฮฟ ฯƒฯ„ฮฑ ฮฟฯ…ฯƒฮนฮฑฯƒฯ„ฮนฮบฮฌ

the wrong case or articles with (when using) nouns

Letโ€™s see some examples. Can you spot the mistake?

ฮŸ ฮฮฏฮบฮฟฯ‚ ฮบฮฑฮน ฮฟ ฮ“ฮนฮฌฮฝฮฝฮทฯ‚ ฮบฮฌฮฝฮตฮน ฯ€ฮฟฮดฮฎฮปฮฑฯ„ฮฟ.

Nikos and Yannis are doing the bike (doing the bike in Greek= cycling).

ฮ ฮฟฯ ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟ ฮปฮฌฮธฮฟฯ‚;

Where is the mistake?

ฮคฮฟ ฮปฮฌฮธฮฟฯ‚ ฮตฮดฯŽ ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟ ฯ€ฯฯŒฯƒฯ‰ฯ€ฮฟ ฯ„ฮฟฯ… ฯฮฎฮผฮฑฯ„ฮฟฯ‚ ฮบฮฌฮฝฯ‰.

The mistake here is with the person of the verb โ€œto doโ€ (ฮบฮฌฮฝฯ‰).

ยซฮšฮฌฮฝฮตฮนยป ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟ ฯ„ฯฮฏฯ„ฮฟ ฮตฮฝฮนฮบฯŒ ฯ„ฮฟฯ… ฯฮฎฮผฮฑฯ„ฮฟฯ‚ ฯƒฯ„ฮฟฮฝ ฮ•ฮฝฮตฯƒฯ„ฯŽฯ„ฮฑ.

ยซฮšฮฌฮฝฮตฮนยป is the third person singular of the verb in the Present Tense.

ฮ•ฮดฯŽ ฯŒฮผฯ‰ฯ‚ ฮญฯ‡ฮฟฯ…ฮผฮต ฮดฯฮฟ ฯ…ฯ€ฮฟฮบฮตฮฏฮผฮตฮฝฮฑ. ฮŸ ฮฮฏฮบฮฟฯ‚ ฮบฮฑฮน ฮฟ ฮ“ฮนฮฌฮฝฮฝฮทฯ‚.

Here, however, we have two subjects. Nikos and Yannis.

Therefore, the verb should be in the third person plural.

ฮŸ ฮฮฏฮบฮฟฯ‚ ฮบฮฑฮน ฮฟ ฮ“ฮนฮฌฮฝฮฝฮทฯ‚ ฮบฮฌฮฝฮฟฯ…ฮฝ ฯ€ฮฟฮดฮฎฮปฮฑฯ„ฮฟ.

Nikos and Yannis are doing the bike (they are cycling).

ฮŸ ฯ€ฮฑฯ„ฮญฯฮฑฯ‚ ฮบฮฑฮน ฮฟ ฯ€ฮฑฮนฮดฮฏ ฯ€ฮฑฮฏฮถฮฟฯ…ฮฝ.

The father and the child are playing.

ฮ ฮฟฯ ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟ ฮปฮฌฮธฮฟฯ‚;

Where is the mistake?

The mistake is that the noun โ€œchildโ€ does not take the male article.

It takes the neutral article. The father and the child are playing.

Both nouns in this case are subjects.

ฮšฮฑฮน ฮผฯ€ฮฑฮฏฮฝฮฟฯ…ฮฝ ฯƒฯ„ฮทฮฝ ฮฟฮฝฮฟฮผฮฑฯƒฯ„ฮนฮบฮฎ ฯ€ฯ„ฯŽฯƒฮท.

And they are in nominative case.

ฮคฮฟ ฮฒฮนฮฒฮปฮฏฮฟ ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟฮฝ ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ.

The book is the student.

ฮคฮน ฯ€ฮฌฮตฮน ฮปฮฌฮธฮฟฯ‚ ฯƒฮต ฮฑฯ…ฯ„ฮฎ ฯ„ฮทฮฝ ฯ€ฯฯŒฯ„ฮฑฯƒฮท; ฮœฯ€ฮฟฯฮตฮฏฯ„ฮต ฮฝฮฑ ฮผฮฑฮฝฯ„ฮญฯˆฮตฯ„ฮต;

What is wrong with this sentence? Can you guess?

ฮœฮฎฯ€ฯ‰ฯ‚ ฮธฮญฮปฮฟฯ…ฮผฮต ฮฝฮฑ ฯ€ฮฟฯฮผฮต ฯŒฯ„ฮน ฯ„ฮฟ ฮฒฮนฮฒฮปฮฏฮฟ ฮฑฮฝฮฎฮบฮตฮน ฯƒฯ„ฮฟฮฝ ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ;

Perhaps we want to say that the book belongs to the student?

ฮŸ ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎฯ‚, ฯ„ฮฟฯ… ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ, ฯ„ฮฟฮฝ ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ.

The noun student in Nom, Gen, Acc.

ฮ“ฮนฮฑ ฮฝฮฑ ฮดฮทฮปฯŽฯƒฮฟฯ…ฮผฮต ฮนฮดฮนฮฟฮบฯ„ฮทฯƒฮฏฮฑ ฯ‡ฯ‰ฯฮฏฯ‚ ฮฝฮฑ ฯ‡ฯฮทฯƒฮนฮผฮฟฯ€ฮฟฮนฮฎฯƒฮฟฯ…ฮผฮต

In order to show possession without using

the verb โ€œto belong toโ€, we use the genitive case. Not nominative.

ฮ•ฯ€ฮฟฮผฮญฮฝฯ‰ฯ‚, ฯ„ฮฟฯ… ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ. ฮคฮฟ ฮฒฮนฮฒฮปฮฏฮฟ ฮตฮฏฮฝฮฑฮน ฯ„ฮฟฯ… ฮผฮฑฮธฮทฯ„ฮฎ

Therefore, the studentโ€™s. The belong is the studentโ€™s.

I hope you found these examples useful.
